The Company

Founded by Malcolm and Dianne James in 1981 and now directed by their son Derek, JBPS has over four decades of family trade history behind every project it takes on. JBPS specialises in facilities management for government departments, community housing providers, and leading commercial and corporate entities across South Australia and Western Victoria. We handle the full building lifecycle: ground-up construction, renovations, and long-term maintenance contracts, all under one roof with one point of accountability.

The Director

Now directed by Derek James — Malcolm and Dianne's son — who grew up in the business and holds an Honours degree in Construction Management and Economics from the University of South Australia. Derek oversees facilities management and commercial construction across regional SA and Victoria, and is actively expanding JBPS's footprint in Adelaide with government and community housing contracts.

Beyond the business, Derek brings a strong record of community leadership — serving as an elected member of Naracoorte Lucindale Council from 2018 to 2022, and currently serving as Chair of Hockey SA, a position he has held for the past two years following six years on the board.

Our History

Over forty years of family,
trade, and craft.

1981

ML & DL James — founded by Malcolm & Dianne

James Building & Property Services began as ML & DL James, a family partnership founded by Malcolm and Dianne James in Naracoorte, South Australia. Malcolm, a carpenter and cabinetmaker who had honed his skills supervising construction teams for Sitzler Bros in the Northern Territory, brought exceptional trade knowledge and a hands-on work ethic. Dianne came from a family steeped in hardware and plumbing supply, and together they built something genuinely different from the ground up.

1980s

Carpentry, joinery & hardware

In its early years the business operated as ML & DL James Carpentry, Joinery & Hardware — supplying materials and services to plumbers, other builders, and the broader Limestone Coast trade community. Malcolm's multi-trade skills and Dianne's supply background gave the business a breadth that set it apart from single-trade operators from the very beginning.

1990s

Growing into full construction

Through the dedication and hard work of Malcolm and Dianne, the business steadily evolved beyond carpentry and joinery into broader construction and property services. A reputation built on quality trade work and reliability meant that clients kept coming back — and referring others. The foundations of what JBPS is today were laid in this decade.

2001

James Building & Property Services

The business formally became James Building & Property Services, reflecting its evolution into a full-service commercial construction and property maintenance company. In 2003, Derek James — Malcolm and Dianne's son — joined the business, bringing an Honours degree in Construction Management and Economics from the University of South Australia and a new generation of leadership to a company already two decades strong.

2010s

Facilities management & government contracts

Continued investment in compliance, safety systems, and trade coordination led to JBPS securing significant government facilities management contracts — programmed maintenance, reactive response, and multi-site asset management across the Limestone Coast and South East SA. The business that started supplying plumbers and carpenters was now managing building portfolios for government departments.

2024–26

Adelaide & Victoria — a third generation builds on

Now operating across South Australia and Western Victoria, JBPS has grown from a family carpentry and hardware business into a multi-disciplined construction and facilities management company — while keeping the same values Malcolm and Dianne started with in 1981.
